Kenya National Trading Corporation is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives mandated to act as a procurement agent for the Government The Corporation is also mandated to promote the development of SME’s markets, partner with key players to avail inputs for the agricultural sector, improve and strengthen supply chain and distribution systems for both the formal and informal sector, stabilize consumer commodity prices by ensuring balance in supply and demand through availability of goods/stock in the country.

The Board of Directors seeks to recruit a trans-formative and goal driven individual with ability to drive organization change, to fill the position of the Managing Director. Reporting to the Board, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, driving business growth in a high integrity and ethical environment, promoting corporate reputation and visibility and ensuring operational effectiveness and efficiency.


Job Specifications

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be responsible to the Board of Directors for the day to day management and administration of all the activities of the Corporation.  Specific duties and responsibilities of the Managing Director will entail:

  1. Ensuring implementation of the Board of Directors’ decisions;
  2. Overseeing the development, implementation and review of the Corporation’s long term strategies, business plans, annual operating budgets;
  3. Providing leadership and strategic direction (formulation, implementation and evaluation) in accordance with the Corporation’s vision, mission, goals and standards;
  4. Ensuring that all financial and non-financial resources of the Corporation are effectively and efficiently managed;
  5. Maintaining financial controls, prudent procedures, adequate records, and accountability standards that meet requirements of state corporations, the funding partners and other collaborating agencies;
  6. Providing strategic leadership in Corporation’s programme, work and operations;
  7. Ensuring close partner and collaborative relationships between the Corporation and government or private sector;
  8. Fast track the implementation of the staff and the corporate performance Contract;
  9. Provide advice to the Board on all matters related to commercial activities, the emerging trends and new market ventures;
  10. Facilitating marketing and programming functions;
  11. Ensuring KNTC complies with relevant legislations;
  12. Ensuring continual improvement in the quality and value of services and products provided by the Corporation;
  13. Fostering a corporate culture that promotes implementation of ethical and good corporate governance practices.
  14. Providing effective links between the Corporation and stakeholders locally as well as internationally;
  15. Serve as the link between the Board of Directors and the members of staff;
  16. Being the Corporation’s accounting officer for all matters appertaining to running of the affairs of the Corporation;
  17. Transacting, managing and making decisions which may be necessary in the conduct of Corporation’s business; and
  18. Directing, managing and developing staff including: hiring, orientation, training, counseling and evaluation and support them in their professional and personal development and approve termination from the Corporation’s service.


Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have/be:

  1. A minimum period of fifteen (15) years work experience in a busy commercial environment.
  2. At least six (6) years relevant work experience in Senior Management.
  3. Bachelors Degree in any of the following disciplines: – Business Administration, Commerce, Marketing, Human Resource, Public Relations, Economics, Finance or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution;
  4. Masters Degree in any of the following disciplines: – Business Administration, Commerce, Marketing, Human Resource, Public Relations, Economics, Finance or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution;
  5. Be a member of a professional body where applicable;
  6. Certificate in Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized Institution;
  7. Proficiency in computer applications;
  8. Demonstrated managerial, administrative, and professional competence in work performance and results;
  9. Fulfill the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution;
  10. Exhibited a thorough understanding of public sector institutions, national goals, policies, objectives and ability to relate them to proper management of KNTC Function.

  4. Experience in competitive set ups with significant distribution and stock costing
  5. Good administrative and coordination skills
  6. Ability to manage and sustain high cost center performance, compliance and performance standards
  7. Familiarity with Government financial, operational and development plans and vision 2030
  8. Understanding of trade policies and regulations in a trading environment
  9. Business development skills
  10. Interpersonal, Communication, Negotiation and Analytical skills;
  11. Proactivenes and ability to work under pressure;
  12. Managerial, supervisory and Leadership skills;
  13. Decision making and problem solving skills;
  14. Professionalism; Ethical and Team skills.


Candidates will be required to satisfy the requirements of chapter six of the Constitution of Kenya on leadership and integrity and are hence required to submit clearance / compliance certificates from the following institutions together with the job application:

  • Kenya Revenue Authority
  • Higher Education loans board
  • Ethics & Anti – Corruption Commission
  • Directorate of Criminal Investigations
  • Approved Credit Reference Bureau


The Managing Director shall hold office for a term of three (3) years and shall be eligible for re appointment subject to terms.
